Govardhana Puja/ Go Puja/ Annakuta (October/November)

Govardhana Puja, Go-Puja and Annakuta are all connected with the story of Lord Krishna lifting Govardhana Hill to protect the inhabitants of Vrindavan from torrential rains. On this day devotees build with sweets a replica of the hill, which they then circumambulate. Cows are especially honoured on this day, being dear to Lord Krishna. Large quantities of food are made by devotees and offered on the altar and then distributed to everyone. Hence the name ‘Annakuta’: Anna meaning ‘made from grains’.
